When to Plant Out:

  • After all danger of frost has passed.

  • Harden them off first! Gradually introduce them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days (start with shade and increase sun exposure each day).

Where to Plant:

  • Sun: Full sun (6–8+ hours/day).

  • Soil: Loose, well-drained, and rich in organic matter.

  • Spacing:

    • Home gardens 40-80cm apart

    • Commercial growing 30-40cm apart

How to Plant Them Out:

  1. Prep the Soil:

    • Loosen to at least 30cm deep.

    • Mix in compost or well-rotted manure for nutrients.

  2. Dig Holes:

    • Slightly larger than the root ball.

    • Plant them at the same depth they were in the pot.

  3. Firm & Water:

    • Gently firm the soil around the cutting.

    • Water them in well.

  4. Stake (if needed):

    • For taller varieties, insert a stake next to the plant at planting time.

Caring for Dahlia Cuttings

Watering:

  • Keep soil evenly moist (not soggy).

  • Water deeply 2–3 times a week in hot weather.

Feeding:

  • Start feeding 2–3 weeks after planting.

  • Use a low-nitrogen fertilizer every 2–4 weeks to promote flowers over foliage.

Pinching:

  • When plants are about 30cm tall, pinch out the growing tip (just above a pair of leaves) to encourage bushier growth and more blooms.

Deadheading:

  • Regularly remove spent blooms to keep flowers coming.

Pest & Disease Watch:

  • Watch for slugs/snails (especially early on), aphids, or mildew - spray with pesticide if required.

  • Good airflow and spacing help prevent disease.

The best thing about dahlia cuttings is they will grow a nice clump of tubers over summer (should you decide to dig and divide in winter and grow multiple plants) Read more on the dahlia care guides about how to dig and divide your tubers.
